NAPO® in the Schools

NAPO® in the Schools is a nationwide community outreach program of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO®) that brings professional organizers into the schools to teach students the benefits of being organized and basic organizing principles in a totally interactive classroom presentation.

NAPO® in the Schools started in 2004 in Los Angeles with the NAPO-LA chapter to bring professional organizers into elementary schools as a community outreach program. This year marks the launch of the Elementary School portion of this program nationwide as part of NAPO’s strategic plan, with Middle School and High School programs currently under development.

Program

Each school program includes an interactive presentation to be given to students in a classroom setting by a professional organizer. The presentation lasts anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes, depending upon the time available with the teacher. Teachers and students are then asked to give feedback in an evaluation form at the end of the presentation. Handouts that include organizing tips are distributed to parents to start a dialogue between parents and students about being organized.

Elementary School Presentation

The emphasis is on managing their stuff. The character Drake is introduced as a disorganized kid during an interactive presentation where the students see the impact of how being disorganized affects Drake's life. The students find ways to get him organized and see how being organized helps him. A hands-on organizing exercise is completed in the classroom to teach students basic organizing principles and the concept of sorting.

Middle-School Presentation

The emphasis is on time management and understanding the concept of time. Students discuss the big change from elementary to middle school, the importance of planning their time to be able to manage their schoolwork with after school activities and their social life with friends and family. Scheduled for fall of 2008.

High School Presentation

The emphasis is on paper management and understanding the concept of filing. Students explore ways to organize their papers for mid-terms and finals, finding a good match for what would work for them. Scheduled for fall of 2009.
